Március 8-án világszerte a nőket ünnepeljük – a nemzetközi nőnap a tisztelet, az elismerés és a nők jogaiért folytatott küzdelem jelképe. Az ünnep eredete az 1900-as évek elejére nyúlik vissza, amikor a nők egyenlő jogokért, szavazati jogért és jobb munkakörülményekért harcoltak.
A nőnap mára nemcsak a múltbeli küzdelmekről szól, hanem a jelen kihívásaira is felhívja a figyelmet. A nők továbbra is küzdenek az egyenlő bérekért, a család és karrier összehangolásáért, valamint a társadalmi elismerésért.
Ezen a napon virágok, kedves szavak és figyelmesség kíséri a nőket, de a legfontosabb, hogy ne csak ezen az egy napon, hanem egész évben elismerjük a nők munkáját és szerepét a világban.
Március 8-a egyben a mosogatógép feltalálójának, Josephine Cochrane szülinapja is.
Josephine 1839 03. 08-án született egy Chicago közeli kisvárosban. 19 évesen férjhez ment és két gyereket szült. Más választása nem nagyon volt, mert akkoriban nem tanulhattak a nők, választójoguk sem volt, önállóan még bankszámlát sem nyithattak. A család egy kastélyban lakott, ahol Josephine nagyszabású vacsorákat adott, de elkeseredve látta, hogy a nagymama míves porcelánját mosogatás közben megkarcolják a cselédek. „Ha senki más nem találja fel a mosogatógépet, akkor én magam fogom megcsinálni” – fogadta meg.
Egy jó fej szerelővel, George Butters-szel kezdett dolgozni rajta a házuk mögötti fészerben, és pár év múlva szabadalmaztatta. Majd 1893-ban bemutatta a columbiai világkiállításon- a szállodák és éttermek sorban álltak a találmányért. Az ő álma azonban az volt, hogy MINDEN NŐ háztartásában legyen! Ez csak a tömeggyártással valósult meg, cégét az ezredfordulón megvette a KitchenAid, majd a Whirlpool.
Amerikában az 1960-as években vált részévé a háztartásoknak, több tízmillió – százmillió?- nő életét megkönnyítve.
